Max Dumesny began his career in motorbikes racing scrambles in Allansford, Victoria while working as a motorbike apprentice at Warrnambool Honda. However, his career in motocross didn’t last long due to a freak accident hitting a cow on a motorcycle. Forced to a wheelchair for months after breaking his arm in 25 places and his leg at just 19 years old, Max decided to turn to four wheels.
At a young age Max enjoyed watching his hero Bill Wigzell run around the high banks of Premier Speedway, so decided to make the transition to speedway. In 1978 Max stepped into Formula 500s, it didn’t take long for him to find his rhythm and win an Australian Formula 500 Title at 21. In 1983, Max made the move to Sprintcars where he won the Wayne Fisher Memorial at then Parramatta City Raceway. In 1984, Max joined forces with engine builder John Sidney, the two found success in a variety of motorsport divisions. 1988, saw the beginning of a longtime relationship between Max Dumesny Motorsport and Valvoline. After multiple World Series Sprintcar Championships, Grand Annual Sprintcar Classics and Australian Sprintcar Titles, Max continues to race with partner and longtime sponsor, Valvoline.
While he was most known for his time in Sprintcars, Max won Australian titles in a Formula 500s, NASCAR, a Australian Speedcar Grand Prix and even raced a Bathurst 1000. To this day Max still says his biggest career highlight was giving the outlaws the boot at the 1985 Race of States during the Knoxville Nationals in the USA while racing for Bob Trostle.
Since 1992 Max has been the Australian distributor of Hoosier Racing Tire, with stores in both Sydney and Melbourne. Over the past 28 years Max has built up his parts shop even manufacturing his own race wheels, MaxWheel. His wheels can be found in a variety of motorsports including Sprintcars, Speedcars, drag racing and even the newly formed s5000 division.
In 2015, Premier Speedway named a race in Max’s honour to recognize his achievements and connection to his home track. The Max’s Race has been held each December since the event's inception.
In 2016, Dumesny Racing unveiled their four car team at Valvoline Raceway, while Valvoline announced Max was the longest sponsored person worldwide. Max was inducted into the Australian Speedway Hall of Fame for his success in dirt racing.
In 2019, Max was inducted into the Australian Motorsport Hall of Fame for his contribution to the Australian Motorsport industry.
